Robert Lee Shoemaker I, 54, of 5227 Western Pike, Hancock, Md., passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, in War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. His death was unexpected and attributed to heart failure.
Born April 3, 1959, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Leetrice J. "Lea" (Brown) Shoemaker of Waynesboro and the late William S. Shoemaker.
Mr. Shoemaker was a graduate of Waynesboro Area High School with the Class of 1977. He later attended Penn State University
He and his wife of 34 years, Mrs. Gere L. (Weller) Shoemaker, were married Oct. 21, 1979, in Hagerstown, Md. They had lived at their present residence since 1985.
In 1978, Mr. Shoemaker began his career in Law Enforcement as a Cadet on the Hagerstown Police Force. In 1979, he transferred to the Mercersburg, Pa., Police Force. From 1981 until his death, he worked for the State of Maryland as a correctional officer at Jessup Correctional, later transferring to the Hagerstown Complex and at Roxbury Correctional Institute and Maryland Correctional Institute. He also was employed by FedEx from 2006 until his death.
He attended Virginia Avenue Church of God, Hagerstown. He was a member of Owls Club, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, William "Max" McLaughlin VFW
Post 695 and Eagles Club Inc., all of Waynesboro, and Union of Maryland Correctional Employees Association. He was also active in Boy Scouts of America where he served as Scout Master for Troop 7 in Hancock, Cub Master of Pack 15 in Hancock for eight years and also received his Order of the Arrow.
Mr. Shoemaker initiated Vet Dogs program in 2012 which became the first Maryland Prison Program that allowed inmates to train service dogs for American servicemen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by three daughters, Michelle Smith and her husband, Mark of Aretmas, Pa., and Brittany Shoemaker and Tara Shoemaker, both of Hancock; one son, Robert Shoemaker II and his wife, Tina, of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Victoria Smith, Michael Johnson and Kandice Crisel; one sister, Ruth Anne McKee of Waynesboro; one brother, Bill Shoemaker of Hanover, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Shawn Bushman officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
