H. Wayne Cheek Obituary
H. Wayne Cheek, age 72, of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014, in Chambersburg Hospital following a heart attack.
Born Sept. 21, 1941, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, he was the oldest child of the late Rosa Cheek Roberts and Glen Clayton Roberts. He grew up in Ewing, Virginia, where he graduated as valedictorian from Thomas Walker High School in 1960. While attending Brigham Young University (BYU), he met and married his wife, Cheryl, on Dec. 19, 1972, in the LDS Provo Temple in Provo, Utah.
Wayne valued education. After his discharge from the army, he decided to go back to school, so he worked the night shift at a spinning mill to support himself while studying at East Carolina University before transferring to BYU and earning a BS in agronomy. He later did graduate studies at Virginia Tech. After retirement, it became his dream to serve a humanitarian mission for his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, teaching English abroad. He wanted to help people to escape poverty and hardship. To prepare for this, he returned again to graduate school obtaining a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Penn State University in May 2014.
Wayne above all else loved his family and his faith, and was an example of how to live with integrity and kindness. He especially loved his dear sweetheart, Cheryl, and worked every day to make her happy. She is still discovering SHMILY (See How Much I Love You) notes he left for her. He had a gift for making all people feel loved and appreciated and made many friends. One of his greatest joys was seeing his wife, children and grandchildren happy and achieving their goals. He was a farm boy at heart and was never happier than when in his garden or walking through fields.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Pope Cheek; son Joseph Cheek (Liza) of Marietta, Georgia; son Matt Cheek (Brittney) of Suwanee, Georgia; daughter Sarah Cheek Grainger (Jack) of London, England; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Roberts Sowders (Doug) of Bloomfield, Indiana, and Jocelyn Roberts Johnson (John) of Richmond, Kentucky, as well as a half sister Judy Moore Bledsoe (Ed) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held for family and friends at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11887 Mentzer Gap Road, with Dale Moore officiating, on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m., with a viewing on the same day at 9:30 a.m. at the church.
Graveside military services will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pennsylvania, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund, found at http://pef.lds.org, a fund to help children and young adults in developing countries to receive an education to become self-sufficient.
Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, is handling the arrangements.
