Howard L. Berley Obituary
Howard L. Bierley, age 78, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, died at 7:48 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Nov. 25, 1935, in Antrim Township (Upton, Pennsylvania), he was the son of the late Harry C. and Cora (Brechbill) Bierley.
He was employed as an engineer with the former Frick Co. of Waynesboro and last worked at JLG of McConnellsburg. Howard also taught at the Franklin County Vo-Tech School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957-59 reaching the rank of lance corporal.
Howard was a life member of the Marine Corps League of Chambersburg and life member of the St. Thomas American Legion. He was an avid fan of Civil War history and attended music jams at the Greencastle Senior Center. Howard was a 1953 graduate of the St. Thomas Township High School and received his BS degree from Penn State University in 1991.
Surviving family are two daughters Donna Meyers of Chambersburg, Wanda Ritchey of Landisville, Pennsylvania, two sons, Gary Bierley, Chambersburg, Brian Bierley of Carlisle, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson Derek Meyers, two sisters Helen and Virginia and two brothers Edwin and Kenneth.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life gathering and meal to be held at the Marine Corps League banquet room, 450 Grant St., Chambersburg, on Sunday, July 13, beginning at 1 p.m. A funeral service will also be held on Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating. A visitation time at the funeral home with the family will be on Monday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow the service in the Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church Cemetery near Mercersburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Marine Corps League, 450 Grant St., Chambersburg, PA 17201. Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanfh.com.
