Ronald L. "Ron" Schwinger Obituary
Ronald L. "Ron" Schwinger, 73, a resident of the Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, and formerly of 11656 Gehr Road, Waynesboro, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, in the nursing home.
Born March 27, 1941, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Howard Edwin Schwinger and Kathryn Marie (Wishard) Nicholson Schwinger.
He was a graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the Class of 1960 where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He later completed U.S. Army Basic Electronic School, Ordinance Guided Missile School and LaCrosse International Guidance Class.
Mr. Schwinger served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from September 1960 until July 1963, serving with the 224th Ordinance Detachment in Seoul, Korea, 1962-1963.
He and his wife, the late Mary Jo (Stotler) Schwinger, were married June 6, 1970, in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro. Mrs. Schwinger passed away April 27, 2005. He entered the Village of Laurel Run in 2011 after suffering debilitating stroke in 2010.
Mr. Schwinger was employed as a central office technician for United Telephone/Sprint Co. from 1965 until his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro. He was a life member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 and William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, both of Waynesboro.
Mr. Schwinger was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles and Elvis. He and his late wife held season tickets to the Phillies and frequently attended Elvis concerts. Ron also enjoyed photography, golf, electronic and computer technology projects.
He is survived by one sister, Dolores "Dottie" Nicholson Hutton and her husband, Howard "Chic" Hutton of Fayetteville; his devoted friend, Linda Sandifer; his niece, Kathryn M. Donahue of Philadelphia; his nephew, Mark H. Hutton of Fayetteville; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2014, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Rev. Dennis Beaver and Rev. Richard Seaks officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services Thursday morning in the funeral home.
