Mr. George M. "Smitty" Smith Obituary
Mr. George M. "Smitty" Smith, 74, of Brookdale Drive, Waynesboro, PA, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018 in Waynesboro Hospital.
Born October 13, 1943 in Blain, PA, he was the son of the late Frank and Florence (Martin) Smith.
Smitty has been in aviation for more than fifty years. Forty years of that time has been serving the corporate aviation industry and ten years in the airlines.
He graduated from Blain Union High School with the Class of 1961 and attended Marywood College. He took great pride in his service to our country, enlisting in the US Navy in 1961 and attending many service schools. He was an Aviation Ordinance man for Grumman S2F Trackers on the USS Intrepid serving with an antisubmarine warfare group. The Intrepid was part of the recovery crew for Scott Carpenter's project Mercury orbital mission during his service.
After discharge from the Navy, he attended Burnside-Ott Aviation Academy where he earned his Commercial, Multi-Engine, Instrument Rating and Flight Instructor Certificates. He also earned type ratings in the HS-125 (Hawker 700), LR-35, CE-500, F-27, SBR-40 and gained experience in the CV-580 and DC-9.
He has flown all the Cessna aircraft through the Citation I and II, all the Beechcraft, and all the Lears through the 60, and all Hawkers from the 1A to the 700.
Smitty has flown airline service for Allegheny Airlines from 1965 to 1971, logging 7200 hours in Convair 580's and Fairchild F-27's. He has logged 23,000 hours of flight time including 17,000 hours in corporate jets.
He has been chief pilot for AMF, Inc., Landis Tool Company, Barnes and Noble Book Stores, Inc. In Barcelona, Spain, he started Roca Industries Corporate Flight Department.
In the mid 1990's, he founded Aero-Smith, Inc. in Hagerstown, MD and Martinsburg, WV, servicing aviation on the Eastern Seaboard as a full service FBO, providing management, aircraft charter, fuel service and flight training.
Smitty has been an NBAA member since 1973, he is a 20-year member of NATA and has served on numerous committees for NBAA.
Locally he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro where he served as an Usher, on the Board of Directors of Noah's Ark Day Care Center, Administrative Board and Finance Committee. He also was a member of Waynesboro Country Club and Joe Stickell American Legion Post # 15, Waynesboro.
Smitty is survived by his wife, Mrs. Judy K. (Quinn) Smith; four children, Susan Esparza and her husband, Bob of McKinney, TX, David Stenger and his wife, Tracy of Bethesda, MD, Jason Smith and his wife, Tina of Mechanicsburg, PA and Kellie Mozingo of Bangor, PA; ten grandchildren, Julian, Tyler and Reagan Esparza, Cameron, Caleigh and Kennedy Stenger, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Smith and Joseph and Laryssa Mozingo; one sister, Elaine Reeder of Lebanon, PA; two brothers, Jan Smith of Mechanicsburg, PA and Jay Smith and his wife, Dottie of Elliottsburg, PA.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date in Christ United Methodist Church, 100 South Church Street, Waynesboro. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
