Donal F. Ballou Obituary
Donal F. Ballou, 87, of Bunker Road, New London, New Hampshire, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at his home. He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on April 5, 1927, the son of Willis and Frances (Silsby) Ballou.
Donal spent his early years in Massachusetts, moved to Annapolis, Maryland, and later in his childhood to Croydon, New Hampshire. He graduated from Towle High School, Newport, New Hampshire, in 1948. It was in Croydon that he met his lifelong love, Betty. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. The family lived in many different areas including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas and Ohio. They lived many years in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, where they still own a home. They became New Hampshire residents again in 1990 when they built their current home on Pleasant Lake.
Donal was a mechanical engineer working for the York Division of Borg-Warner and Frick Co. He established his own company, Refrigeration Systems Corp., in Columbus, Ohio, in 1974 and successfully expanded the business into several other states. To aid in his business development, and because of the thrill and challenge, Donal obtained his pilot license in mid-life and personally piloted the company's plane. Donal was a founding member of IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration). He was passionate about his career and garnered the respect of his colleagues. After retiring in 1992 he put the same zest into enjoying his family and retired life.
First thing in the morning Donal enjoyed using his scull to travel the perimeter of Pleasant Lake. Always the mathematical mind at heart he faithfully recorded his time to the second. He also was an avid golfer. Donal had a very active lifestyle; living up to his motto of "just keep on doing what you've always done," he always continued to do his own yard work.
Members of his family surviving include his beloved wife of 65 years, Betty (Gross) Ballou of New London, New Hampshire; a daughter and son-in-law, Daryl and Mike Shrider of Newark, Ohio; a grandson, Greg Odom of Denver, Colorado; siblings, Willisa Dorian of Washington, Frances Everard of Rochester, New Hampshire, John Ballou of W. Lebanon, New Hampshire, Margaret and her husband, Ted Pearsall of Alexandria, Virginia, Thomas Ballou of Croydon, New Hampshire, Dottie Jean Muzzey of Lebanon, New Hampshire, Elizabeth Monty of Maine, Willis and Julie Ballou of Croydon, New Hampshire, Robert and Lynn Ballou of Newport, New Hampshire, and James Ballou of Croydon, New Hampshire; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Joan Gross of Mount Sunapee, New Hampshire; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank Kenneth Dolkart, M.D., and Konstantin Dragnev, M.D., at DHMC for the exemplary and professional care they provided to Donal.
Friends may call at the Ballou Family Residence, 335 Bunker Road, New London, New Hampshire, on Saturday, July 12, 2014, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Croydon Village Church, Route 10, Croydon, New Hampshire.
