Richard N. Bikle Obituary
Richard N. Bikle, 82, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at his home.
Born June 7, 1932, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Robert J. Clohecy and Helen V. (Cox) Bikle and the adopted son of the late Austin H. Bikle.
He was a graduate of Smithsburg High School class of 1950 and attended Hagerstown Junior College and the University of Maryland.
He was employed over the years by the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University, the Maryland State Police, Fairchild Aircraft and spent several years working for various engineering firms around the country, mastering his skills, before working on the Genesis Project for a year in Salt Lake City, Utah. He returned to the area to work as vice president and director of engineering for Grove Manufacturing for nearly 20 years, before starting his own business in the early 1970s, Bikle Manufacturing, which is still in operation today.
Richard was an active member of the Republican Party and ran for a state senate seat in 1974. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Hagerstown, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown and a former member of Salem Masonic Lodge 196 of Smithsburg. He was a licensed aviator who enjoyed flying.

Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years Joan E. (Benchoff) Bikle, son Richard A. Bikle of Las Vegas, Nevada, granddaughter Joanie Gerber and husband Eric, grandson William Cooper and wife Stephanie, all of Smithsburg, grandsons Omar Bikle and Clayton Bikle both of Las Vegas, Nevada. Richard is also survived by great-grandsons Nathaniel Gerber, Owen Gerber, Cole Cooper and Quentin Cooper, several nieces and nephews and many friends and staff members at Bikle Manufacturing.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Susanne E. Bikle and one brother, Dr. Robert Clohecy.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at 3 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home of Smithsburg, with Pastor Julie Brigham officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, in memory of Richard and his daughter Susanne Bikle, at 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
