Russell C. Weikert

1928 - 2014

Russell C. Weikert, 85, a resident of The Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, Pa., and formerly of 102 Cemetery Ave., Waynesboro, died Saturday afternoon, March 22, 2014, in the nursing home.
Born Dec. 25, 1928, in Cashtown, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel R. and Mary Elizabeth (Cluck) Weikert. He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.
Mr. Weikert graduated from Waynesboro High School with the class of 1947.
He served with the United States Army from 1947-1951, during which he served in Korea for one year.
While in high school and following his discharge from the United States Army, he was the grounds keeper at Green Hill Cemetery for 15 years. He later worked for Landis Machine Co. for one year. Prior to retiring in April 1991, he was a sergeant for the Waynesboro Police Department for 23 years. Following his retirement, he worked part time as a security officer for the Waynesboro Area School District.
He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, William "Max" McLaughlin VFW Post 695, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1191, all of Waynesboro and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 76. He was also a life member of Mechanics SFE & Hose Co. 1, Waynesboro.
He enjoyed attending and working at auctions, including working many auctions with auctioneers Edward Henicle and Gary Carbaugh. He also enjoyed vacationing at the Outer Banks, N.C.
He is survived by one sister, Jean Foose of Chambersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Rose Marie Halterman; and two sisters, Margie Bonebrake and Fay Shaffer.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Rev. Dennis Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening in the funeral home.
