Claire W. Ballard

Nov. 8, 1926 - April 21, 2007

A memorial service for Claire W. Ballard, 80, of Vacaville, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Community Presbyterian Church, 425 Hemlock St., Vacaville. Pastor Mark Wright will officiate.

Claire passed away April 21, 2007, at NorthBay Medical Center after a long illness.

She was born in Helena, Mont., and graduated from Helena Public High School in 1944 and Montana State College in 1947 with a degree in nursing. She married the love of her life, Robert Ballard, on March 17, 1954. With Bob's military career, they traveled abroad to various Army and Air Force bases among them Japan and Great Britain, and finally here to Travis Air Force Base.

Claire earned a California nursing degree in June 1966. She was a surgical and recovery room nurse at Intercommunity Hospital in Fairfield. In 1975, she began work as a school nurse for Vacaville Unified School District at Sierra Vista, Markham, Ulatis and Fairmont schools. She retired in 1986.

In 1975, Claire moved to the Park Villas, where she became an active board member of the Homeowners Association and social and entertainment chairperson for many years. A love of people and good conversation connected her to a large and appreciative circle of friends and neighbors that grew over the 32 years that she lived there.

Also a longtime member of Community Presbyterian Church in Vacaville, Claire was active in many programs - The Shining Stars, Newcomers Group, Bible Study and Circles. She volunteered at the Festival of Trees to support Opportunity House at the holidays.

Her faith was strong as were the friendships that developed in the congregation. She was a strong, independent woman with a caring heart and a positive attitude. Until health issues prevented it, she tried never to miss a Sunday.

Claire was adventurous and a love of travel took her with friends to interesting places such as China, Israel, Canada and Portugal. Closer to home, she enjoyed all kinds of social events - dining out, musicals, symphony, shopping and coffee. She had a genuine sense of caring and a dry sense of humor that endeared her to her friends. Other interests included gardening, reading and a great love of cats, particularly her last two Siamese.

She will be sorely missed by her extended family, Shirley and Joe Foti and their two daughters, Kelly (Greg) Alexander and Terri (Ken) Monson and many lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 1974.

Burial will be next to him in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 455-7700.
