David Van Bemmel

David Van Bemmel, 67, of Vacaville, passed away on Oct. 11, after a brief but courageous struggle with cancer. He was born to parents, Adrian and May Van Bemmel (pre-deceased) on April 12, 1946 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
While attending Indiana State University in 1964-66 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent his entire time at Travis AFB. He achieved the rank of Staff Sargeant, U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam era.
He married Ruth Hutchinson on Feb. 6, 1971 in Santa Rosa, Calif.
David earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and Master of Arts in Business Administration in 1977 from San Francisco State University. In 1974 he went to work for American President Lines with his final position as Country Manager in Sri Lanka.
He also earned his Single Subject Teacher Credential in 1994 from Dominican College. While studying for his Special Education degree from Sonoma State he became employed by California Department of Corrections, Solano, where his work was his most rewarding. For 17 years he was the teacher for the Incarcerated Youth Offenders (ages 18-26). He was the Staff Sponsor for the Peter D Porrino Veteran Group at CA Dept of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Solano.
His only disappointment in life was that he didn't become a teacher earlier.
He was an associate member of the Santa Rosa and Solano County Republican Women, NRA life member, and a devoted volunteer at Bethany Lutheran Church.
David is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons, Tyrie (Tracie) and Derek (Shauna); grandchildren, Nathan, Hutchie and Skylar. Other survivors include brothers, Peter and James; and devoted canine friend, Boggs Mountain, a fine German Short Hair Pointer.
A visitation will take place at Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 E. Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service with military honors will be conducted at Bethany Lutheran Church, 621 So. Orchard, Vacaville, on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m.
Interment will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, on Monday, Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m.
