Evelyn Sooy, 91, of Vacaville passed away after a 14 year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Naples, Oklahoma, she was the fifth and youngest child of Benjamin and Frances Keyes. In 1936, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she later graduated from high school and became a supervisor for Mountain Bell Telephone. In 1943, while riding a municipal transit bus, she was offered a seat by a handsome young Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet named Bruce Sooy. He would become the love of her life and her husband for over 67 years. They became engaged before Bruce left for duty in England as an aircraft commander of a B-24 bomber. Bruce was later shot down over Germany in 1944 and became a Prisoner of War. After Germany surrendered, Bruce was released from prison camp and returned to the States where they were married on July 14, 1945. Together they traveled all over the United States and overseas until Bruce retired in 1979. Next to her family, Evelyn's passion was country western dancing. They would travel many miles on Friday and Saturday nights to dance to the music of their favorite bands.
