William Ross Barnett, 90, of Vacaville, passed away after a long illness.
Affectionately known as Bill, he was born in Oilfields, Calif., and was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1942 and served as a professional naval officer for 23 years before retiring in 1964. His naval service included serving on the USS Helena, a light cruiser in World War II which was sunk in the South Pacific in 1943. His subsequent duty included service on carriers and destroyers. After World War II, he served on various commands and was the commanding officer on the USS Richard B Anderson (DD-786).
Upon retiring from the Navy, he entered the banking industry with Wells Fargo Bank and retired after 12 years as the manager and vice president of the Corporate Trust Department in San Francisco.
The family would like to thank the staff of VacaValley Hospital for their outstanding care, compassion and support.
Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley; two children, Cindy Ross Jagger of Suisun City, Calif., and William Eugene Barnett of Williamsburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Michael Brian Jagger, Elisabeth Anne Shenoy and Mabry Ross Ray; and three great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at Vaca Hills Chapel, 524 Elmira Road, Vacaville on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at 1 p.m.
