Herbert Charles Thomas of Vacaville passed away Wednesday in Sacramento at the age of 62.
Herbert was born in Middletown, Ohio, to Paul and Minnie Thomas.
Herbert served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 16, 1966, to Oct. 15, 1968. His military service included: Vietnam service for one year, one month and 11 days, heavy vehicle driver carrying Nitroglycerin, Co. D 36th Engineer Battalion Construction, Co. D 69th Engineer Battalion Construction USAR PAC, Corps III Ð Vung Tau, Vietnam, Corps IV Ð Can Tho & Soc Trang, Vietnam. Medals awarded: National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter M-14, Marksman Rifle M-16, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal.
Herbert loved to drive. He had driven a truck since he was 12 years old and for the past 15 years had been employed as a driver for Basalite Concrete Products of Dixon. He also enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, square dancing and round dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Fran; children, Sonia Rene Thomas (Chris) Potter of Alabama and Bobby Lee Thomas of Colorado; stepchildren, Ross Franklin (Sheila) Ridler of Kentucky and Rod Glen (Kathy) Ridler of California; two granddaughters; three step-granddaughters; three step-great-granddaughters; brothers, George Michael (Charlene) Thomas of Ohio and Ronald William (Alice) Thomas of Ohio; six nieces; five nephews; eight great-nieces; 10 great-nephews; nine great-great-nieces and 11 great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Paul Vincent Thomas and Minnie Mable Knott; brothers, Paul Robert (Cora)Thomas and Carl Eugene (Carolyn) Thomas; and sister, Mary Bertha Branham.
A service will be held Friday, Dec. 31 at 9:30 a.m. at Sacramen- to Valley National Cemetery. Contributions can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 1102 17th Ave., S No. 304, Nashville TN 37212-2208.
