Norman A. Metcalf

Obituary Condolences

Aug. 7, 1920 - July 20, 2013
Norman has left this world to join friends and family already in the Lords care. Born to Robert and Charlotte Metcalf in Sagamore Massachusetts, his father worked as a bridge tender on the Cape Cod Canal, and his mother was a home maker. Norman's youth was spent with his brother, Robert enjoying all that came with living on the Cape. He was Captain of his Bourne High School Football and Baseball teams, loved ping pong and tennis. WWII ended his new adventures in sailing and he found himself serving as a Radio Telephone Operator in Karachi India supporting aircraft flying the Hump. After the war he and his brother reunited with their parents in Vallejo. Norman married Madeline Bergantini in 1949. He worked at Radant Radio Repair in Napa for a time, then began a career at Mare Island. He especially loved fixing equipment on the tug boats as he said they always had good food on board. In 1957 he moved his family to Vacaville to begin working for Solano County Communications Dept. He and his co-workers battled rugged terrain, heat and rattle snakes to build the first Microwave Radio Repeater on Mount Vaca, giving Solano its first County wide communication system for Fire, Police, and Civil Defense. After Madeline's death in 1964, Norman stayed busy in community activities. He worked many of the Fly Ins at the Nut Tree, setting up the communications gear and manning the tower during the early years of the Airport. In 1968 he married Evelyn Edens and they spent the next 25 years visiting family and friends from Alaska to Florida. Evelyn passed away in 1997. In 1998 Norman met his final love, Pauline French and they married in 2001. They enjoyed the company of many great friends and kept busy going to the local Accordion Club events, weekly dinners, movies and even a few cruises. Norman was blessed to have Pauline by his side and the loyalty of his family and friends.
Norman is survived by his wife, Pauline Metcalf; son, Steven P. Metcalf, (Donnie l Smith); step children, Neva Thorson (Richard), Marilyn Martin (Deceased), Robert Edens (Sandra); grandson, Robert D Metcalf; nieces, Gale Metcalf (Joel ), Judy Harrington (Darrell).
Norman was a two time cancer survivor. He always had a kind word and smile for anyone he met. When you see the towers on Mount Vaca, be reminded of a man who touched many just by living the golden rule. Services will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery at 2 p.m., Monday, July 29. Remember Norm at nadeaufuneralhome.com.
A special thank you to Yolo Hospice for their support in Norman's last days. In lieu of flowers donations can be made toward planting trees in the Vietnam Memorial Grove at Lagoon Valley, contact ballj@prodigy.net. Sub: Norm.
