Theodore Franklin Hay (Ted), 93, passed away surrounded by family on Oct. 8, in Fallbrook, CA. Born on Nov. 5, 1919 to Charles and Mary Vanderhoof Hay in Parker, KS. Ted is survived by his wife of 71 years, Wilma Wilson Hay and daughters, Mary Freeland, Martha Hay-Kaufman, Katherine Jones, Sylvia Ramey, and Peggy Hower, 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Heidel and siblings Ralph, Opal Dye and George. Ted developed a love of aviation while watching crop dusters fly over the family farm. He studied at Fort Scott Jr College and the U of Illinois. Ted proudly served as a WWII flight officer in the US Army Air Corps. He worked for Flying Tiger Airlines, Alameda Naval Air Station, and retired from the Civil Service as a jet engine mechanic at Travis Air Force Base. Ted was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He was known for his love of science and nature, mechanical skill and playful charm. Ted and Wilma constructed a home in the English Hills, and he built a Koala experimental aircraft while in his 70s. Ted's family history is traced through Mayflower passenger John Alden. Donations may be made to Heifer International and the National Parks Foundation.
