William Lafayette Black, born in Chicago, Illinois on Dec. 23, 1923, passed away in Fairfield, CA., on Nov. 16, 2012.
Mr. Black served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 until his retirement in 1972. During his Military Career he became a decorated war hero, having been shot down over the English Channel, taking control of a B-17 from a co-pilot who had been killed.
During his career serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam he received many awards, among them the Air Medal with tree oak clusters, two Distinguished Flying crosses, and the Good Conduct medal.
After retirement from active duty William worked as a machinist, Datsun parts Service Manager and engaged in volunteer work in the Medical Records Section of David Grant Hospital at Travis AFB. His interests included the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Air Force Sergeants Association.
His wife, Mineko Black; daughter, Shirley Boyles; son, Joe Black and grandchildren, Jimmy and Becky Boyles, survive him.
Friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at Bryan Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W. Texas St., Fairfield on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m., and are also invited to attend the funeral service to be held On Monday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m., also at Bryan Braker Funeral Home.
