Doris R. Smith Obituary
Nov. 1, 1925 - Feb. 13, 2018 Vacaville Doris R. Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Vaca Valley Hospital, with family at her side. Born Nov. 1, 1925, in Riverton, NE to Oley and Della (Nelson) Hermanson. She grew up on a farm and was the oldest of five children. After graduating high school, Doris moved to San Diego, where she met Howard (Smitty) Smith. They were married in 1946 and celebrated 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2007. Smitty's service in the Air Force took them to Riverside, CA, Sumter, SC, Fairfield, CA and Amarillo, TX, before finally settling in Fairfield, where they lived for 27 years. Then, in 1995, they moved to Vacaville. Doris' primary focus was her home and family, but she also worked selling Avon for several years, where she made many lasting friendships. Her interests also included sewing, cake decorating, reading and traveling. She and Smitty enjoyed seeing the United States by taking road trips by car or RV. Some of their favorite getaways were Las Vegas, Reno and Cache Creek, where they enjoyed the buffets and penny slots. Doris was extremely proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She loved animals, especially dogs, but she had a particular fondness for 'Oreo', a friendly cat who lived behind Paramount House Assisted living, Doris' home for nine years. Doris is survived by her three children, daughter, Diane R. Chalk (Tom) of Fairfield; son, Ray Smith (Kathleen) of Fairfield, and daughter, Jill Polglase (Craig) of Roseville; grandchildren, Tom Chalk, Jr. (Joyce) and Ryan Chalk; great grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler and Emily Chalk. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gerald, Wendell and Gaylen Hermanson; sister, Beverly Laustrup, and her husband, Howard Smith. Interment services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 19, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon. The family asks that no flowers be sent. Arrangements under the direction of Fairfield Funeral Home, (707) 425-1041.
