Everett Houston Whiting Obituary
May 6, 1930 - Jan. 19, 2013
Everett Houston Whiting of San Jose, Calif, passed away on Jan. 19, in Los Gatos. A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 27, in Dixon, Calif., at the Methodist Church, 209 N Jefferson St., with a reception afterwards at the old Vets Hall downtown, 231 N First St.
Everett was born in Manteca, Calif., to Sidney and Ethel Whiting on May 6, 1930. The family moved to Dixon in 1941. Everett graduated from Dixon High in 1949. He married Elva J Sween in 1957. They lived in Yolano for a few years and then built a new home on Levee Road East of Dixon, where they raised their two daughters and a son.
After his father passed away in 1948, Everett took over his sheep business. He spent six months in Australia during the winter of 1955/56 as an IFYE ambassador and made many lifelong friends there. In 1964, he went to work in downtown Dixon as a real estate agent and broker for Don Miller and Associates. He worked there for the next 32 years. In addition to his real estate work, he was also involved with the Dixon Chamber of Commerce, the first Dixon Kiwanis Club, Solano County 4-H Leaders Council, the Dixon 4-H Clubs, and Dixon Rotary Club.
After retiring in 1996, he and Elva were able to travel to Norway, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, England, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, and many US states from Alaska to Florida; Hawaii to Maine. In addition to traveling, he very much enjoyed gardening and camping. Most of all he loved being surrounded by his family and the ranch was home base for the extended family.
In July of last year he decided that he and Elva should move to the San Jose area to be closer to the kids. With a great deal of help from his children and the Dixon Rotary, the move was made in September.
Everett is survived by his wife, Elva and children, Doreen O'Donovan (Kevin) of San Jose, Kate Sandusky (Preston) of Aptos, and Kent Whiting (Janice) of Campbell; grandchildren, Caryn, Jeffrey, Taylor, Morgan, Sydney and Jamie; his brothers, Bob (Norma) of Roseville, Calif., and Myron (Phyllis) of Walla Walla, Washington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rotary Foundation c/o Ken Courville 1615 Gill Drive, Dixon, CA 95620. Condolences can be left for the family at www.bryanbraker.com.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Dixon Rotary Club for their continued help and support.
Arrangements handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Dixon (707) 693-0292.
