Hirom (Mac) McFarland, 67, passed away suddenly at home on Oct. 21, after chronic illnesses. Mac was a joy to know, a kind soul and a very loving man who made friends every where he went and whose family loves him and will miss him for eternity. Mac was born Nov. 28, 1944, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Hiram and Violet McFarland. After both parent's death, while Mac was a young child, he then lived with his brother, Jerry Taylor, and sister in law, Fran in Japan and then Novato, Calif. He graduated from Novato High School in 1963 then entered the U.S. Army that year.
Mac was active duty Staff Sergeant/Communications Specialist for nine years in the U.S. Army, 1st Calvary, one year in Korea, two years combat in Vietnam; he earned many medals and commendations including two bronze stars, two Army communications medals, the air medal, two Vietnam service medals, one from the United States, and one from Vietnam. Mac was honorably discharged in 1972.
In 1971 Mac married Cynthia Hyatt in Novato; they had two daughters, Dawn and Kelley. Cynthia passed away in 1993 and shortly thereafter he was transferred to Ft. Lewis, Washington, as a DOD Communications Specialist with the 1115th Signal Battalion. He married Janis Williams in 1995 and they lived in Tacoma, Washington. He retired from Ft. Lewis Army base in Nov. 1999, and he and Janis moved to southern Arizona in 2000.
Surviving family include his wife, Janis W. McFarland, Marana, Arizona; brother, CmSgt Jerry and Sally Taylor, Vacaville, CA.; sister-in-law, Fran Shank, Roseville, CA.; cousin, Cindy and Steve Lindbeck, Roseville, CA.; daughters, Dawn McFarland, Fairfield, CA., Kelley McFarland, Kirkland, WA.; granddaughters, Ashlyn, Kaylea, and Jaybriana Jacob, Fairfield, CA.; brother / sister-in-laws, Robert C. and Lonna Hiatt II; nephews, Christopher and Jeffery Hiatt.
Preceded in death by parents, Hiram and Violet McFarland; wife, Cynthia (Hiatt) McFarland.
Mac's interment services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m., at Fairmont Memorial Park, 1901 Union Ave., Fairfield, with military honors by the U.S. Army, and Memorial service follows at 2:30 p.m., at Bryan Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W. Texas St., Fairfield, CA 94544.
