James "Jimmy" Santana Obituary

James "Jim" Santana passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sept. 13. He was born in Stockton, CA., on July 15, 1935. He was the youngest of five children of Joseph Reis Santana of the Cape Verde Islands and Helen Hart of Stockton.
Jim was raised in Stockton and graduated from Edison High School. He was an avid musician who was a drummer in the high school marching band and ran track as well. Jim excelled with his music and performed as a professional musician playing in local clubs. He attended the University of Pacific in Stockton as a music major where he met the love of his life, Jacklyn "Jackie" Whitehouse of Woodland, CA. They married in 1957. He served in the US Army for the first three years of their marriage. They moved to San Francisco in 1959 and upon his discharge in 1960 he attended San Francisco State University obtaining his BA in 1971. His interest in electronics led him to a job at the Listening Post, an electronics and sound system establishment. He also worked as an office assistant for the Benefit Plans of the ILWU and became an ILWU Ships Clerk in 1964. He was an active participant in the Civil Rights movement during the 1960's. During this time he also followed his passion of photography as a freelance photographer and had many of his photos published. Jim became the Area Welfare Director of Benefits for the ILWU in 1987 and was promoted to Coast Benefits Specialist in 1994. He was a dedicated union leader who always put the good of the union and its members as a priority.
Jim and Jackie retired to Vacaville in 1998 enjoying their return to the valley. Jim was very supportive of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren during their formative years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jackie Santana; two sons, Reis Santana (wife Carlene) of Oakland, and Andre Santana (wife Yolanda) of Vacaville; grandsons, Jason (wife Aisha), Rick, Nick (wife Camille), Jeff, Chris, Charles (CJ), and Andre Louis Santana; great grandson, Jovaun, and great granddaughter, Arianna Santana.
A "Celebration of Life" memorial will be held at a future date.
