Robert Long Obituary
Dec. 10, 1941 - July 14, 2014

Robert Long, 72, of Fairfield, passed away July 14 at home surrounded by family. Robert was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin Dec. 10, 1941.

Dad loved to pass the time playing cards Texas Hold 'Em was his game. He had more luck than anyone I have ever met. He even had a chance to "Spin the Wheel" after winning a scratch off ticket. He enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his family and friends.

Dad served our Country in the US Navy for over 20 years. He retired as Master Chief Petty Officer in 1978. Dad had many Achievements, Ribbons and made many Ranks while serving, but his most prideful moment came after he was retired. When his grandson chose to serve in the United States Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller. People would ask him about his service (he never left home without his MCPO-Retired hat on) and he always responded with "Yea I served, and my grandson is in the Air Force".

The day we got his diagnosis was the same day his grandson deployed to the Middle East. He said he needed to fight this cancer, his goal was to see his grandson return from deployment, which he did.

He loved his children, grandchildren, family and friends with all that he was. There was NEVER a phone conversation that his last words weren't always "give them a hug and kiss for me".

He was a proud, prideful man that always spoke his mind. You always knew where you stood with him. His granddaughter nicknamed him her "unfiltered grandpa". He was a very generous man, if he could help you out, he would.

Dad was a fighter and gave all he had up until the end. He was surrounded with family and love as the angels came to call for him.We will miss him each and every day, but take comfort that he is in heaven and no longer in pain.

Preceded in death by his parents, John Long, Grayce Stevens and sister, Jackie Coats.

Survivors include daughter, Nikki (Todd) Anderson from Vacaville; son, Robert David Long, Jr (Sherrie) from Verdi, CA; brother, Mike Sauer from Anaheim, CA; sisters, Lisa Sauer, Sherri Landry from Corona, CA and Kathy (Jim) Baumann from Chandler, AZ; five grandchildren, Zachary, Jessica and Drew Anderson, Adelia Teel and Danielle Long; great granddaughter, Rheyana Lopez; long time friends, Lyle Ferguson and Paul Vowels.

In lieu of flowers you can make a donation to either or Sutter Health at Home (Hospice), 1900 Powell St., Ste 300, Emeryville CA 94608-1815.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 19 at 2 p.m., at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St., Vacaville, with Pastor Victor Zavala officiating.
