Gerald (Gerry) W. Boyes

Gerald (Gerry) W. Boyes, 91 passed Monday, June 11, at Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center with family and friends by his side.
He was born April 15, 1921 on the family farm in Ralston, Iowa to Oscar and Ethel Boyes. He and his brother, Howard walked two miles to the country school, rain, shine or snow. His family moved to Wells, Minnesota in 1935 to be closer to his grandparent's and expand their farm and cattle ranching operation. Many summers were spent with his grandfather in Montana, purchasing cattle for the Boyes Ranch and other local cattle ranchers.
Gerald graduated from Wells High School in 1939 and worked as for a grocery wholesaler for two years before enlisting in the Army Air Corp. He served with the 98th Bombardment Group. The 98th was a B-24 Liberator Bomb Group, deployed to the Middle East for the invasion of North Africa during the summer of 1942. He was stationed in Palestine, Tunisia, Algeria- French Morocco, Rome and Brendisi Italy and Air Combat Balkans. While in Italy, he was assigned to the OSS, and took part in several covert operations. Gerry was truly part of the Greatest Generation; he loved our country and proudly fought for freedom. After the war he returned home and met the love of his life, Eleanor Wiggins, they were married Jan. 19, 1948 in Wells, Minn. Gerry was active in the Wells community; he was Past Commander of the American Legion Post 210 and Noble Grand for The Odd Fellows Lodge. They were a happy, successful and progressive couple and the proud parents of Sandy and Thomas. Gerry retired from the Minnesota Department of Health in 1986 and they enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling and residing in Orlando, Las Vegas and Vacaville. During the past three years in Vacaville, Gerry lived life to the fullest. His 90th birthday was celebrated in regal fashion with a Casablanca themed dinner party, followed by an evening of dancing. His faith, love of our country and positive attitude was an inspiration for all.
Gerry is survived by his daughter and son in law, Sandy and Bob Freethy; grandchildren, De Arah, Mandy, Jameson, Evan and Dylan Freethy; one great-granddaughter, Ava Freethy-Garcia. He was predeceased by his wife and soul mate of 63 years Eleanor; his son, Thomas, and brother Howard.
Memorial Mass will be held at St Joseph Catholic Church at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, July 11, Interment will follow at the Vacaville Elmira Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions preferred to: Notre Dame School in memory of Gerald Boyes.
