Ernest Aluisi Elia, 94, died March 16 of natural causes. He was surrounded by family who loved him.
Ernest was born in Fresno on May 23, 1918, to Jim and Rose (Aluisi) Elia. He was raised and educated in Fresno. He graduated from Edison Tech High School in 1936 and received a degree in Business Administration from Fresno Junior College in 1938. He was a permanent member of the California Scholarship Society.
He married Genevieve Chiarito on April 15, 1938, and moved to Vallejo in 1939 where he became employed at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. They returned to Fresno in 1946 and opened Club Elia Restaurant and Bar. In 1952, they came to Napa, and Ernest was re-employed at Mare Island as a Management Analyst, eventually becoming the supervisor of the department. He received several awards from Mare Island for developing and implementing cost-reduction systems and procedures.
He was a member of the St. Apollinaris Catholic Church, Native Sons of the Golden West, the Italian Catholic Federation (Branch 12), and the Napa Valley Country Club (NVCC). He was an avid bowler in the Napa Bowling Leagues and won many trophies. He also golfed three to four times per week and scored four hole-in-one shots at NVCC.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve, and his brothers, Dominic Elia and Chet Elia of Fresno, and Alfred Elia of Napa.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ernest J. and Johann Elia, of Vacaville; granddaughters, Tina Jackson and Toni Lewis; great grandsons, K.C. Yost, Caleb Yost, Tyler Lewis, Todd Lewis; and great granddaughter, Taylor Lewis.
