JAMES COONEY James P. Cooney, 68, of Harleysville, died Saturday, January 19, 2013. He was the husband of Maryann (Quinn) Cooney. Born August 25, 1944 in Syracuse, NY, he was a son of the late James and Mary (Cahill) Cooney. Mr. Cooney was a tenured, full professor in the Humanities Division of Montgomery County Community College where he taught since 1973. During this time, he served terms as Coordinator of Philosophy and Coordinator of English and also served as President of the Faculty Senate. Earlier in his career, Mr. Cooney was an Instructor in English at the State University of New York at Oswego. He then served in the same capacity at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, MA before beginning his career at MCCC in 1973. Jim held an undergraduate degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY and received a Master's Degree in English from Duquesne University in 1968. He went on to complete his doctoral course work and comprehensive examinations at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1978. Jim was also a writer and contributor to the former North Penn Reporter. He was an avid golfer and traveler and, earlier in life, was active with the Lansdale Jaycees. He cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Colleen Opdyke and her husband, Gregory of Quakertown, Gregory P. Cooney of Flagstaff, AZ, and Kate Hanna and her husband, Bill of Gilbertsville; step-daughters, Jennifer Sukaly and her husband, Rob of Harleysville, and Sarah Meyer and her husband, Benjamin of Harleysville; seven grandchildren; brother, Thomas E. Cooney of Chittenango, NY; and sister, Mary Jane Cooney of Syracuse. Relatives and friends may call between 5 and 7PM Tuesday, January 22 at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale. A second visitation will be held between 9 and 10AM Wednesday at the funeral home before processing to St. Stanislaus Church, 51 Lansdale Ave., Lansdale, for the Funeral Mass at 10:30AM.
