Richard John Wagener(1935 - 2014)

RICHARD JOHN WAGENER Richard John Wagener, 78, of Harleysville, formerly of Lehighton, passed away May 26, 2014 at The Abramson Center in Montgomery Twp. He was born on July 6, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Albert and Sarah (Durbin) Wagener. On June 8, 1957, Richard married Carol M. Hopkins, whom he had met at the governor of Michigan's Youth Advisory Board. Richard earned his Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Detroit and dedicated his professional career towards helping others. Richard spent 30 years with the American Red Cross including 20 years as the Executive Director of the Essex County, NJ Chapter. He became a Rotarian in the 1970's and soon after served as the President of the Newark, New Jersey Rotary Club, and later of the Lehighton Rotary Club. During retirement, Richard and Carol remained extremely active in Rotary, including a term as governor of Rotary District #7410 and as current members of the Harleysville Rotary Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Daniel Wagener and wife Susan, Kathleen Weltman and husband Jerry, Thomas Wagener and wife Danielle, Suzanne Cunningham and husband Scott, and Robert Wagener and wife Erin; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Wagener. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Creighton and William Wagener. Family will receive friends from 6-8PM on Thursday, May 29, at Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford (Franconia Township). Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass at 10AM on Friday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 900 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale. Interment will be private in Calvary Cemetery in Southfield, MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to The Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Dr., Chicago, IL 60693.
