LEONARD BLUMBERG, Ph.D. Leonard U. Blumberg, Ph.D., 92, of New Hope, passed away May 25, 2013. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years, Grace Rose (Hummers) Blumberg, who died in June of 2012. Born August 19, 1920 in Philadelphia, Leonard was a son of the late Louis Blumberg and Jennie (Sherman) Blumberg Clark. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers. A graduate of Girard College, he went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He proudly wore his Girard College and U. of M. caps for the remainder of his life. Dr. Blumberg was a professor of Sociology at Temple University in Philadelphia, and for ten years, was the co-director of research at the Philadelphia Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center. He was best known for his research and writing on Skid Row in Philadelphia and other cities. In addition, he published books and scholarly articles on alcoholism, religion, and social movements. Leonard was a long-time member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and was a member of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting. Prior to that, he was a member of Southampton and then Cheltenham Monthly Meetings. He was active in Abington Quarterly Meeting for many years. As a believer in the traditional Peace Testimony of Friends, he was a Conscientious Objector during WWII and was an active participant in Civil Rights activities during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1955, the first intentionally integrated suburban housing development in the United States was built. Leonard moved his family into the community to support the vision that different races could live together in harmony. Leonard was an avid hiker of the Appalachian Trail and the Horse-Shoe Trail. He was a member of the Horse-Shoe Trail Club for many years and enjoyed their camaraderie while clearing trails of overgrowth. He enjoyed wood carving, visiting art museums, and collecting pottery. Leonard is survived by four children, Eric S. Blumberg (Laura) of Ferndale, MI, Judith B. Fox (David G. Grossman) of Vienna, VA, Martha L. Blumberg of Morrisville, and James W. Blumberg (Laura) of Livonia, MI, his late wife's two daughters, Katherine L. Carson of New Hope, and Elisa R. VanHorn (David) of Horsham; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held 1PM Saturday, August 10 at Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, located on the corner of Route 202 and Sumneytown Pike, between North Wales and Spring House. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leonard's memory to Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, 1101 DeKalb Pike, Gwynedd, PA 19454. Arrangements are by Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
