GUSTAVE ROBERT SCHMITT Gustave Robert Schmitt, 96, of Towamencin Twp., died Thursday, May 15, 2014. He was the husband of the late Evelyn L. (Holliday) Schmitt who he married April 25, 1942, and shared 69 years of marriage. Gus was a former resident of northern New Jersey for 29 years. In March of 1947, he moved to PA. He was a resident of Towamencin Twp. for 67 years, where he built his own house. Born December 23, 1917 in Newark, NJ, he was a son (one of nine children) of the late Gustave G. and Catherine (Smith) Schmitt. Gustave graduated from Union High School, Class of 1937, in Union, NJ. Mr. Schmitt served in the US Army for four and half years during WWII as a Staff Sergeant for the 61st Station Hospital, serving overseas 33 months in North Africa and Italy. He also did office work for two Colonels. He was formerly employed by Heston S. Swartley for five years, previous to that for 22 years at the former Martin Century Farms (now Lehigh Valley Dairy) in Lansdale. He was an active charter member of Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Lansdale, serving as janitor for 25 years. He helped in constructing their first church building which previously was the old power house in Lansdale. His interests include reading, flower and vegetable gardening; raised fruit orchards, kite building, artistic drawings, pen pal letter writing, wrote his own history, carving wood animals: made one for each of his children, and many for his own house. He loved to visit his children and grandchildren. Surviving are his five children, Donald Schmitt and wife, Dawn, of Pennsburg, David Schmitt of Towamencin Twp., Nancy Kulp, and husband, James, of Telford, Daniel Schmitt and wife, Lysa, and Douglas Schmitt and wife, Lora, both of Harleysville; a sister, Anna Whitehead of Morristown, NJ; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may greet Gustave's family from 10:30 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Avenue, Lansdale. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, North Wales. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Community Church, Missions Fund, 983 Allentown Rd, Lansdale, PA 19446. Arrangements are by Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
