Harold Cassel Obituary

HAROLD CASSEL Harold Wayne Cassel went to be with his Lord Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Brittany Pointe Estates in Lansdale. He was 91. Harold was the beloved husband of Elaine (Hackman) Cassel, with whom he would have celebrated 66 years of marriage this June. Born in Perkasie, he was the son of the late Abram and Mattie (Kilmer) Cassel. Marrying in 1947, Harold and his bride moved to Lansdale, where he spent the rest of his life, retiring to Brittany Pointe Estates in January, 2001. Harold was a graduate of the former Sell-Perk High School in 1939. Upon graduation, he was employed as a salesman for Taylor Motors in Perkasie, before proudly serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. His tour of duty lasted from 1942 to 1945, taking him throughout Europe and North Africa. Upon his return from WWII, Harold was employed by General Electric Company in Philadelphia. Then in 1951, he began his career in insurance and real estate when he joined the N. H. Hackman Insurance office, becoming an Insurance Broker and then owner of Cassel Real Estate and Insurance, of Lansdale. Harold lovingly passed this business to his sons upon his retirement. Harold was a long-time parishioner of St. John's UCC in Lansdale, where he served as President of the United Adult Class, was a member of church council, and served as a greeter and usher. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, William E. Hare Post, and Shiloh Lodge No. 558. Passionate about sports, he was a lead pitcher and hitter for several community softball teams, enjoyed many years in a competitive bowling league, and was an avid and powerful tennis player. And although Harold greatly enjoyed all sports, he was a fervent fan of professional baseball and greatly enjoyed watching the Phillies. Harold's other passion was Bridge, in which he and Elaine enjoyed countless hours participating in tournaments from Florida to Canada, eventually earning the "Gold Life Master in the ACBL." In addition to his wife, Harold is survived by his children, Sandra Catapano of Hatfield and fianc Scott Egolf of Lansdale, Gary L. Cassel and wife Cheryl of Lansdale and David A. Cassel and wife Jennifer of Chalfont. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild, Jason Cassel and son Maxwell of Burnsville, MN, Julie Cassel-Ball and husband Charles of Lansdale, Jenna Cassel of Lansdale, Philip, Allison, Samantha, Rebecca, and Rylee Cassel of Chalfont. Harold was preceded in death by his son-in-law, George Catapano, who went to be with his Lord in March, 2011. Harold was a generous and loving husband, father, and grandfather, with an unwavering devotion to his family. His warmth and gentleness made an indelible impression on all who knew him. He will be sadly missed. Relatives and friends may call between 6PM and 8PM May 23 at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale. A second visitation will begin 9:30AM May 24 at St. John's UCC, 500 W. Main Street, Lansdale, PA 19446 followed by a memorial service at 11AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Cassel's memory to St. John's UCC of Lansdale at the above address.

My grandfather was such a kind hearted, funny, and gentle soul. He loved baseball, The Phillies, and Bridge. I remember going to his house when I was young, having sleep overs with my siblings and cousins, and always playing cards, and watching baseball. I will always remember the last kiss I got from him, and the last time I heard him say "I love you". He is forever on my mind, always in my heart, and will never be forgotten. I love you Grandpop!!!!!!
