Harry W. Guenst Obituary
HARRY GUENST Harry W. Guenst, 92, of Lansdale, died Monday, December 26, 2011 at Manor Care, Lansdale. He was the husband of the late Sara E. (Schwenk) Guenst, who died July 20, 2005. Born November 29, 1919 in Norristown, he was a son of the late William and Anna (Hermann) Guenst. Mr. Guenst was a member of the 1937 Lansdale High School Football Team which went undefeated and was inducted into the North Penn High School Hall of Fame. He began his career as a Carpenter's Apprentice and became a Master Carpenter employed by Turner Construction. Mr. Guenst served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Mariana Islands during World War II. As a member of the SEABEES, he designed and constructed many projects, including the runway for the Enola Gay. Upon returning to civilian life, Mr. Guenst rejoined Turner Construction as a Carpenter Foreman and became a preeminent Site Superintendent. He later was employed by Irwin & Leighton and Keating Construction. In an era of competitive bidding, he was proud to have been chosen by John Wanamaker for numerous, non-bid contracts due to his expertise. A partial listing of his projects include Misericordia Hospital (Philadelphia), Sacred Heart Hospital (Norristown), Nazareth Hospital (Philadelphia), Paoli Hospital, American Baptist Convention, Liberty Bell Race Track, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, Princeton Computer Center, Eagle Lodge Convention Center, the UPS Facility in Horsham, six buildings for John Wanamaker & Co., and two buildings for RCA/GE. He is survived by three children, Diane Gillon and husband, Dr. David Gillon, of Santa Barbara, CA, James H. Guenst and wife, Barbara, of Lansdale, and Cheryl Dischell and husband, Mark, of Lansdale; seven grandchildren, Jenn Duffy, Zachary Gillon, Stephanie Harper, Katie Wengler, Jackie Dischell, Julia Dischell, and Harry Guenst; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers. The Funeral Service will be held 10:30AM Thursday, Dec. 29, at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale. Relatives and friends may call after 9AM. Burial will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
