Donald M. Schmechel, 92, of Elm Terrace Gardens in Lansdale, formerly of Hatfield, died Saturday, February 15, 2014. He was the husband of the late Marguerite M. Carey, to whom he was married on September 23, 1950.|
Born in Lewisville, MN on March 28, 1921, he was a son of the late Edward and Augusta (Karau) Schmechel.
For 19 years he lived on a farm his parents had in Ramsey County, ND. After graduation from high school in 1938, he completed a correspondence electronics course from National School of Electronics in Minneapolis. Upon completion of the course, he was employed by that school for nine months as a traveling field instructor, visiting students in parts of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Indiana. In March 1942, he took employment at Farnsworth Television & Radio Corporation in Marion, IN.
Upon his discharge from serving in the Army and Army Air Force, from October 3, 1942 to November 1, 1945, Mr. Schmechel returned to employment at Farnsworth in Marion, being shortly thereafter transferred to the company's facility in Fort Wayne, IN. In March of 1947, he left Farnsworth and took employment at the TechRep Division of Philco Corporation in Philadelphia. He was employed there for 15 years and then for an additional 14 years by other divisions of Philco and Philco-Ford Corporations. After early retirement in October 1976, he was employed for six years at Fischer & Porter Company of Warminster.
After retirement, Mr. Schmechel and his wife became full-time recreation vehicle users and until June 1993 traveled the contiguous 48 states, spending winters in California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida.
Mr. Schmechel was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, King of Prussia.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, John Schmechel; sister, Margaret Dombrowe; and brother, Walter Schmechel.
Surviving are his two daughters, Gail D. Benjamin and her husband, Frank, of Carson City, NV, and June L. Price of Perkiomenville; three sons, Paul E. Schmechel and Eric L. Schmechel and his wife, Robin, both of Hatfield, and Mark D. Schmechel and his wife, Billie Jo, of Meadville; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 7pm, at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 E. Beidler Road, King of Prussia, PA. There will be no visitation. Burial will be private in George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Plymouth Meeting. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Schmechel's name may be made to Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church at the address above. Arrangements are by Huff and Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
