ROBERT SWARTLEY Robert W. "Bud" Swartley, 90, of Lansdale, passed away May 22, 2012 at Abington Health - Lansdale Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Agnes J. (Kunze) Swartley, who died in 1999. Born March 3, 1922 in Line Lexington, Bud was a son of the late P. Howard and Esther (Weikel) Swartley. Bud graduated from the former Hatfield High School in 1940, along with his high school sweetheart, Agnes "Snookie" Kunze, whom he married December 28, 1946. After graduating from high school, Bud attended Bluffton University for a year while waiting for his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. After attending the U.S. Naval Academy for a year, he received an honorable discharge and completed his education at Lehigh University. He graduated in 1947 with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and was a member of the ATO Fraternity. Upon graduation, Mr. Swartley joined his family's business, Swartley Brothers Engineers, Inc., founded in 1923, in Lansdale. As one of its owners and presidents, he worked there until his retirement in 2007. Bud contributed to the Lansdale community for many years, receiving many lifetime achievement awards from the Lansdale Lions Club, including a "55 years of service" award in 2009. Bud was an avid bowler and bowled in the St. Stanislaus Bowling League for 10 years in the 1960's. Also, Bud was an active member of Indian Valley Country Club and won various golf awards over the years. He had a Hole-in-One at IVCC along with one at Pinehurst, NC March 18, 1957. As a P.E., he was involved in the Professional Engineer's Society for many years. And, as a long-standing member of La Crest Health Spa, he became involved in running. In one year alone, he ran over 1,400 miles and participated in many mini-marathons. In addition to playing golf, Bud loved spending time with his family. He will also be remembered for his dedication to his family business, his honest, humble and caring personality and his love of animals, especially his dogs Lassie, Mikey, Muttley and his two beagles, both affectionately named Wally. Mr. Swartley is survived by two children, Judy Swartley Loush and her husband, Ken, of Bethlehem, and Bob Swartley and his wife, Renie, of Skippack; six grandchildren, Derek Loush and Ali, Bob, Audrey, Tom, and Natalie Swartley; his companion, Jane McCullough; a brother, Lloyd Swartley and his wife, Margot, of Lansdale; a brother-in-law, Harleigh Rosenberger of St. Petersburg, FL; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Bud was preceded in death by two brothers, Philip Swartley (Helen) and John Swartley (Floss); and two sisters, Dorothy Swartley Rosenberger and Virginia Swartley. A visitation will be held 6 to 8PM Friday, June 1, at the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale. There will be another opportunity to greet the family from 9 to 10:30AM Saturday, June 2 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 51 Lansdale Ave., Lansdale, where a prayer service will be held at 11AM. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montgomery County SPCA, 19 East Ridge Pike, PO Box 222, Conshohocken, PA 19428.
