SHIRLEY MAHONEY Shirley Lorraine (Cole) Mahoney, 78, beloved wife of John W. Mahoney of Collegeville, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, at Columbia Cottage, Collegeville. Born February 27, 1935, in Norristown, Mrs. Mahoney was a devoted daughter of the late John J. and Edna M. (Taney) Cole. She was a 1953 graduate of Norristown High School. In the 1950's, Mrs. Mahoney joined her husband in operating the family business of Mahoney's Greenhouse. In 1972, they had expanded their business to create the Village Garden Center on Ridge Pike, in Limerick. After John's passing in 1993, Shirley became the sole proprietor until her retirement in 2007. She was a Master Gardener, a Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Assn. member and a member of the Pennsylvania Growers Association. Mrs. Mahoney was a member of St. Eleanor Catholic Church. As a child and young women, she was an accomplished dancer and accordionist who performed on band leader Paul Whiteman's ABC TV Teen Club, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City's Steel Pier. She later opened a dance studio in E. Norriton with a friend where they taught tap and ballet. She also enjoyed playing the piano throughout her lifetime. Mrs. Mahoney is survived by her children, Joseph of Collegeville, Cherylanne of Sanatoga, Michael and his wife Pamela (Hoopes) of Perkiomen Twp., Dennis and his wife Eve (Johns) of Gilbertsville, and Stephen and his wife Pamela (Engstrom) of Upper Providence Twp. She is also survived by her brother, Gerald Cole of Anaheim, CA, her sister Helen Scanlon of Blue Bell, her sister-in-law, Regina (Mahoney) Brunner of Collegeville, and her brother-in-law, Francis and his wife Margaret Mahoney of Trappe. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Margaret Kershaw, Kathryn Murphy, Edna Sands, Henrietta Cole, Dolores Watson, John Cole Jr., and Harry Nelson Cole. She will be severely missed by all, including her nine grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. All of which she dearly loved. The funeral mass will be held at 10AM Wednesday, at St. Eleanor Catholic Church, 6th Ave. & Locust St., Collegeville. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, E. Norriton Twp. Friends may call from 7 to 9PM Tuesday, and 8:30 to 9:30 AM Wednesday, both times at the Holcombe Funeral Home, Inc., 21 Main St, Trappe.
