Russell D. Buhite PhD(1938 - 2018)

Russell D. Buhite, PhD. passed away on May 27, 2018 after a short illness. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary, to whom he was married for almost 59 years, and father to three children: Russell S. Buhite (of Bainbridge Is.,WA), Ellen Gallagher (deceased), and Michael (of Rolla, MO). He is survived by his wife, sons, sister Marion Asel, granddaughter Gracie Gallagher, and grandson Nicholas Buhite.
Dr. Buhite was a professor of history for 45 years at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Tennessee, and Missouri University of Science and Technology, for which he also served as Dean of Arts and Sciences. A noted scholar in U.S. diplomatic history, he was the author of a dozen books, one of which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Letters. He was a thoughtful and kind man with a wonderful sense of humor who loved his family dearly, enjoyed good books, the company of interesting people, and of course his life-long love – baseball – having played professionally prior to entering academia. He despised ignorance, prejudice, bigotry and intolerance, especially towards religion. He lived by the code that one should offer a kind word or a helping hand to a colleague, friend, acquaintance, or stranger.
No memorial service is planned per his wishes. Those wishing to contribute to a cause or non- profit may wish to consider donating to University of Oklahoma Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non- profit, in the name of the "Ellen Buhite Gallagher Prize in History Fund,", which was formed to honor outstanding history majors at OU who plan to attend law school after graduation: by check (ref.
