I have been away receiving treatment myself and did not know that my dear doctor had passed away after her long battle until just now. She was my doctor for 20 years and I truly loved and respected her. Her passing is a great loss to her patients and the island's medical community. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband, family and of course her Family Practice family, especially Carol. I will miss her practical advice and the way that she knew me so well. Very sad.

Just devastated to hear the very sad news which I have only just heard about as I am in the UK. Dr. James was my doctor at Family Practice, I loved her feisty manner and genuine concern she always showed to me. She will be missed so much. My condolences to all her family members.

Dear Sandy, I met you in Boston earlier this year but knew Dr James from her days of being my doctor growing up. She was always, as so many others have said, so caring. I have thought of Dr James often since our paths crossed in Boston late last year and am so sorry to her of her passing. My sadness and disbelief at my doctor's passing were a bit mitigated yesterday at the memorial service. Sanders and Leigh and Mr. Darling along with the letter from Valerie's father drew us all together. Archdeacon Doughty raised us up. The music was wonderful. May the family be comforted by the touching and memorable service yesterday.

I was heartbroken to hear of Dr James' passing. She was more than my doctor of 18 years (and also cared for my daughters and husband the last 5 years). We loved and respected her so much. Dr. James has been my doctor for many years and she has always been very caring and concerned about our health. I worked at the hospital for all the years that I have known her and although I have retired,at many times that I went to her for an appointment , she would always say that she counldn't stop but she would make it a point to say hello. I was just told of dr James's passing, as I no longer reside in Bermuda. Oh how she will be missed by all who knew her and especially her patients. Valerie was an excellent doctor, respected by her peers and health professionals and loved by her patients. She was a great friend and colleague, who I will truly miss. When Valerie worked as Medical Office at the Health Department, we worked together on a health study at one of the schools. Valerie had to get blood samples from some of the children, to lessen their fears she brought her parrot Strudwick to school with her. The kids loved him and she had no trouble getting their blood! Dear Sanders and Valerie's Family,
Valerie was an outstanding doctor.....no one could ever question her experience, her work ethic or her dedication to her patients. I was privileged to be part of her team for several years at the Family Practice, and she taught me so much.

I will miss Dr. James. She was a GREAT doctor. She really cared for her patients. She always asked me about myself first before she dealt with why I had come to see her. I used to see her at the grocery store sometimes and she always called me by name and asked how my daughter was. She wasn't just your doctor, she was also a friend. For many years I worked at the hospital and on several occasions would pass Dr. James in the corridors not knowing who she was but we always acknowledged each other. I was quite shocked to learn of her passing. After reading the wonderful tributes in her honor I can truly attest to every genuine word. Not only did her kindness impact on her patients but to me personally. As I witnessed and can honestly say is that if there was ever an angel I crossed paths with t recognize her and believe she was a true example of God's intent for all humanity. Dr. James was one of the most sensitive, caring Doctors I've ever had. Her work didn't stop in the office. She took time out of her schedule and visited me daily when I became ill 1 month prior to delivering my child.
Dr. James was a one of a kind lady and will be a real miss.

I had not been a patient of Dr. James for very long but I found her to be caring, efficient and thoughtful. She made many visits to me in the hospital when I had surgery for double knee replacements. Her friendly professionalism was very welcome. Dr. James will be greatly missed.

At the end of. 2012 my husband and I moved into a house opposite Valerie's father, Dick James, and his lovely wife Maggie in Launceston, Tasmania Australia. Sometime during the last 12 months Dick needed to visit Sanders and Valerie's property near Ross, Tasmania, and invited my husband I to accompany them. An amazing property. I did not know or meet Valerie, but through Dick and Maggie I felt I knew her. Reading the admiration and love of Valerie confirms everything I had imagined. My heart is breaking for her family, for her husband and for her friends and most particularly for her father Dick, who not that many years ago lost his son, Valerie's brother, to cancer as well. A father should not have to endure this. Am so saddened that such a beautiful soul has left this world.

What a loss!
Dr James was truly an old fashioned Family doctor. She cared for her patients, both their physical condition as well as their general well being. She comforted you when that was needed and also celebrated with you. You did not leave an annual physical without her requiring and update on all the family members around you. I remember having a preference for male doctors as I had never encountered a female physician I liked-that is until I met Dr. James. I took to her right away. She was so kind and caring and you always felt that she genuinely cared about you as a person and that she wanted the best for you. She had such a reassuring way about her-I just can't explain it...even if she found something wrong, she just had such a calm way of handling it and you felt you were in safe hands.
I am in such shock right now. My prayers go out to the family of this wonderful woman. She will be sorely missed.

My sincere sympathy goes out to Dr James' family, friends, and colleagues. Valerie 'fought the good fight with all her might'. Despite her severe illness, she pushed on - instead of lying in her hospital bed, she would walk the corridor, IV in tow - even venturing outside the main lobby to get some 'fresh air'. I shall miss her friendly smile and greetings as I continue to volunteer at the KEMH information desk. She had an amazingly positive attitude about the disease and how she personally would handle it. She was a brave and courageous lady and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. May she Rest in (well deserved) Peace.

Always busy I looked forward to my annual appointment with Dr. James, I can see her smile, asking how have you been?quietly and patiently waiting for you to say whatever you needed. I had the pleasure to know Dr. James for nearly 30 years, she stuck by me through thick & thin, good times & bad. I am so very very sorry to hear the sad news about Valerie. I'm traveling and only just heard and I am beside myself with grief. Valerie was a wonderful doctor and friend. She was truly amazing. There are countless occasions when she came to my rescue when I was ill or needed advice, even if I was abroad, through life's tough times, just endless really. So caring. I could go on and on. She was more than just an incredible doctor, she was a friend. We had a lovely visit a few weeks ago and I will always cherish that memory along with so many others. Dear Sandy,
My deepest thoughts are with you with loss of your special wife, Valerie. She was a great doctor during the time we worked together in Casemates while I was in charge of the medical services in the prison.
I remember the grand farewell we gave her when she was leaving to open up her Family Practice. She was so surprised. Valerie was so highly thought off that many of the prison officers changed to her practice.
I was so happy to have the opportunity to visit her and have a good talk. She was worried about what will happen to you. I know she spoiled you so.

My heart is broken for the family and The Family Practice center. Valarie was more than a Dr and made you feel important. She was my husband's Dr in Prison and took me on many years later. I just had to call and she always called back, no matter the time and made sure you were ok. We had many wonderful talks and laughs. We will both miss her very much and appreciate the concern Dr White has shown us. We often talked about me running and lifting weights and her words to me was "to always keep doing what you are doing." There are two things I will always remember about Valerie. Her love for Sandy and the seriousness in which she approached her profession. She was a tough cookie, but a caring one. I also remember the day when I fainted because a patient was bleeding. She gently persuaded me that I might be better off as a social worker rather than the nurse I had hoped to be. She turned out to be right! I am very grateful for the role she played in my career and family life. My deepest sympathies to Sandy, her family and the Family Practice Group.

My mother who died in June, was visited by Dr. James on at least 2 occasions; once in the ICU and once on a general ward. Dr James made it known that she was making special visits to my mom because she had been her GP all these years and still considered it her duty to visit her patients; all the more amazing considering she was facing her own end of life battle. What a remarkable and selfless person! Bermuda (and the world) just lost a truly remarkable person.

I was overcome with true saddness to see that Dr. James had passed..she was a Kind,understanding Doctor and a wonderful person, who always had a smile. My condolences from my family to her husband/ family and her "Family Practice" family. She will be greatly missed!
