Richard Leroy Brown went to be with our Lord on February 11, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 8, 1923 in Bighorn, Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1948 with a B. S. Degree in Chemistry. World War II interrupted his college education when he served with the 8th Air Force in England. He was a member of a B-17 crew and flew 21 combat missions over Germany as a radio operator gunner. After the war, he stayed in the Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was married almost 64 years to the love of his life, Virginia Lindsay, in Casper, Wyoming in 1948.|
His professional career as an analytical chemist began in Casper, Wyoming when he joined Chemical & Geological Laboratories. He became the manager of their new laboratory in Midland, Texas in 1951. In 1955 he moved to Billings to become one of the owners of Yapuncich, Sanderson & Brown Laboratories which is known today as Energy Laboratories. He retired as its president in 1990. He was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Montana Geological Society, and past-president of the Department of Montana Reserve Officers Association, as well as past president of Billings Chapter No. 2. He had many years of enjoyment for the game of golf and celebrated his first hole-in-one in 2005.
Richard's faith was very important to him which he passed down to his family, who he considered to be his single best accomplishment in life. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Roy (Kim), and Bill (Amy Gibler), of Billings; Bob (Mary), of Sacramento, California; and one daughter, Patty O'Connell (Curtis), of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He will be dearly missed by his eleven grandchildren, Katie, Roy, Gillian, Nate, Joe, Amanda, John Samuel, Molly, Ryan, Timothy, and Colin, as well as his great-granddaughter, Leah. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Mary (Murphy), two brothers, Jerry and Bill, and two sisters, Mary Ellen (Watson) and Nora (Seeley).
A vigil will be held on Friday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Avenue, Billings, MT, 59102. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 15th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2055 Woody Dr., Billings, MT, 59102. A private burial will take place at a later date.
