HERRIN -- Ronald Paul Manning, 75, formerly of Fairfield, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, in the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna, with his wife by his side.
Ron was born June 19, 1937 in San Diego, to Paul Manning and Elaine (Maxwell) Atkinson. He was married to Jannette Smith on Oct. 12, 1989 in Murphysboro. Ron and Jannette shared 22 years of marriage together.
Ron was retired, having taught at SIU Carbondale. He also taught privately to students seeking English as a second language from his home. He was a veteran of the United States Navy
, having served his country honorably during the Vietnam War
Ron gave of himself and served in the Peace Corps, where he taught internationally. He was a graduate of SIU Carbondale with a Master of Arts degree, with English as a foreign language. He enjoyed playing chess and backgammon. He was an avid reader. Ron and Jannette enjoyed traveling together before his health began to fail.
Ron is survived by his wife, Jannette Smith-Manning of Herrin; brother, Steve Atkinson of Sarasota, Fla.; sister, Rebecca Larson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister-in-law, Texanna Hernbeck of Herrin. He is also survived by several nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Alan Rynerson.
In accordance with Ron's wishes, there will be no services at this time. Services will be at a later date.
Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements.
