HERRIN -Wardell "Butch" I. Riggs Jr., 66, died Saturday, March 23, 2013, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, surrounded by his fam-ily.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Monsignor Kenneth Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin, with military rites performed by Herrin VFW
and American Legion Post with the Army National Guard. Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Monday, March 25, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to San Carlo Cemetery, c/o Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 316 West Monroe, Herrin, IL 62948. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
Wardell was born Nov. 30, 1946, in Carbondale, to Wardell I. Sr. and Virginia Lou (Cartner) Riggs.
He married Patricia Pankoff on Sept. 27, 1988, in Paducah, Ky. They renewed their vows in Herrin, in 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Riggs of Herrin; daughters and son-in-law, Marisa Riggs of Herrin and Chrissy and Chad Whitaker of Coldwater, Mich.; stepdaughter, Karen Harrison of Dallas, Texas; stepson, Tom Harrison of Lake of Egypt; dear niece, Terri Vineyard of Harrisburg; sister, Sara Riggs of Carrier Mills; brothers, Daniel Riggs of Harrisburg and Patrick Riggs of Carterville; grandchildren, Drake and Chase Lannom of Herrin, Cerey and Quinn Whitaker of Coldwater, Mich., and Mackenzie Harrison of Dallas, Texas.
Wardell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael Riggs; sister, LuDawn Hegney; and niece, Michele "Mikki" Pender.
He honorably served our country in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant.
Wardell was an operating engineer and heavy equipment operator for Local 318. He also worked for Etherton Oil Company which later became Heritage Oil Company in Marion.
He was a member of Crab Orchard Golf Course in Carterville where he belonged to the 11 o'clock group. If he wasn't out playing golf, he was in playing "Pitch" card games with the boys.
Wardell was also a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and the Elks in Herrin.
