Charles Freeman Obituary

MURPHYSBORO -- The Lord welcomed home Charles Edward Freeman, 90, of Springfield, June 5, 2011, in St. John's Hospital.

He was born Nov. 26, 1920, in Murphysboro to William O. and Dollie Jeffery Freeman.

He married Earlene Raines nearly 69 years ago, July 11, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents, their son, Charles Edward Free-man II, and his siblings, John, Everett, Helen, Catherine and Bob.

Mr. Freeman was a proud World War II veteran in the Navy, serving on two destroyers, the USS Renshaw and USS Jarvis. He was privileged to experience a Washington, D.C., trip with the Honor Flight Organization. He was an independent maintenance contractor for oil companies for more than 60 years. Charles enjoyed his family, friends, working comrades and life in general. He was a great historical storyteller. Although he attended Riverton United Methodist Church, he was a member of First Christian Church in Murphysboro.

He is survived by his wife, Earlene; daughter, Judith (Jerald) McCullough of Riverton; grandsons, Jay McCullough of Riverton and Jeffery (Victoria) McCullough of Rochester; great-grandsons, Austin McCullough of Riverton and Zachary of Rochester; cousins, Tanna Robinson and Phyllis (Mike) Bergant and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today, June 8, 2011, in Crain Pleasant Grove Murdale Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rick Sutton officiating with full military rites at graveside. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church of Murphysboro or United Methodist Church of Riverton and will be accepted at the funeral home.

I am very sorry for your loss. Charlie Freeman was a good man. I hadn't seen him in many years, but I can clearly remember Charlie setting many tanks and gas pumps for my dad, Bob Sherertz. Anytime there was a problem with a tank or a pump, Dad could always depend on Charlie and I know he thought the world of him.

Earlene and family, Charlie was a good man and exceptional friend who was always there to help when called upon, even in the middle of a busy day if i called he would say doc I'll be there as soon as I get done here. There are few people in this world you come across who you can say it was an honor and privilege to have known them and Charlie was definitely in that category. Your family has my heart felt sympathy. James E. Simpson D.M.D.

Charlie was a good man and a proud father. I always enjoyed sitting around and talking to him on the occassions we had to be together. We offer our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies. May the Lord bless and keep his remaining family.
