COLP - Alonzo R. "Sonny" Willis passed away at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at home. He was 68 years of age.

Born April 23, 1945, in Herrin, he was the son of Carl "Luke" Copening and Eva Mae Willis.
Sonny was a Vietnam War veteran serving in the Marine Corps.
He was retired from Chicago CTA as a transit policeman and later as the warehouse manager.
A member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Colp, he served on the trustee board. He was a member of American Legion Post 34 and a life member of VFW Post 1685, both in Anchorage, Alaska. Sonny was the past president of the Colp-Dewmaine Reunion Council and former water superintendant of the Colp Water Department.
He married Patricia J. Furnace March 24, 2008, in Marion.
Survivors include his wife; children, Alondra Willis of Chicago, Enrico (Kim) Willis of Peoria, and Avanta Willis of Chicago; his mother, Eva Mae Gray of Colp; grandchildren, Sonya, Savanta, Samiyah, Irzoza, Alonzo, Candace, Taraine, Jon Omari, Jordan and Jaden; two stepdaughters, Samantha Furnace of Anchorage and Tara Burke of Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonja, and father, "Luke" Copening.
Services will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 18, in Mount Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mitchell Bryant and Elder William Shephard offi-ciating. Interment will be in Colp-Dewmaine Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Marion American Legion, VFW and National Guard Ritual Team. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.
Jackson Funeral Home in Colp is in charge of arrangements.
