Ivan Sams Obituary
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2011, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. R.H. Chitwood officiating. Burial will be in North Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville with military rites performed by Marion VFW Hyde-Pillow Post 1301 and Illinois Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Ivan was born July 4, 1930, in West Salem to Joseph and Mary Sams. He married Beryl Cobble on Dec. 23, 1950, in DeKalb; she preceded him in death June 1, 1989.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Bruce Tyner of Cambria; grandchildren and their spouses, Sam and Brandy Tyner of Cambria and Tobie and Benji Cain of Carterville; great-grandchildren, Payton Tyner, Devon Cain and Hannah Cain; brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Millie Sams of California; sister, Ersel Hall of Sycamore; and dear friend, Linda Hicks of Greenville, Mo.
Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife and four brothers and sisters.
He honorably served our country in the U.S. Army and Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Ivan retired in 1991 after 42 years of service as a lineman for DeKalb Ogle, GTE Sandwich and GTE in Carterville and Carbondale.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Carterville, the Moose Lodge and the Sportsman's Club in Sandwich.
Ivan was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. People from all over the area knew him as the "bee" man.

Peggy, Bruce & family. Sorry to hear of Ivan's passing. I always enjoyed talking with Ivan. He usually had a funny story/joke and sage advice at the same time.
