It is hard to believe Jack has been gone 10 years. In the process of downsizing I have come across a number of items that remind me of Jack. We both loved Neptunes and had many discussions about where this and that P2V tail number had served. Jack made the world a better place and his legacy lives on for all that served with him or were blessed to be his friend.

I worked with Jack over an 11 year period, when I served as MMCO, AMO, MO and XO of different squadron and Wing entities here in Hawaii. Not only was Jack a plethora of information for all of us serving here, Jack was my mentor, my rabbi...and he was TRULY like a father to me. Jack was the consummate leader and professional; he loved those he mentored and led, and his commitment to his "kids" showed in everything that he did. Jack was one of the most insightful and patient individuals I've ever met...he loved to pass on knowledge and insight. I love you brother, and you will be sorely missed. I'll see you on the other side, and we'll talk story again.

I am the chaplain doing Jack's service tomorrow. He was the Master Chief of a good chaplain friend of mine, Gary Carr. It will be an honor to remember this great patriot, warrior and Navy leader. Doug Waite, CAPT, CHC, USN, Navy Region Hawaii and Surface Group Middle Pacific Chaplain

jack personified everything about being a chief petty officer.
no matter what the situation or the pressure, he was always calm and in control, i don't think i ever met another chief who i respected more.

Our condolences to the Cargal family. I met Jack during my tour with VP-9 in 1995. He became a mentor and someone I could turn to for advice. I looked up to Jack and enjoyed his friendship over the years. I remember during ILSMT Jack always knew the answers to the historical P-3 Fleet trivia questions and I know everyone thought highly of him. Jack, you and your family are in our thoughts and you will be missed my friend.

I met Master Chief Cargal in early 1983 when I was a brand new 18 year old Airman arriving at VQ3. Master Chief Cargal saw to it that he met and talked individually with each new enlisted arrival. I was immediately impressed with his authoritative and responsible demeanor, and his youthful/healthy appearance. Aside from that first meeting and a few passing marathon words here and there, regretfully, I never had another discussion with him.
Like everyone else I saw him running [running not jogging] daily, at high noon. Because of his age at the time [~51] I was highly impressed with him [remember he was more than 30 years older than I] I had never seen a senior enlisted man in such unbelievably athletic condition. To this day I still tell people about this fifty something year old Navy Master Chief, and how he could still run 80-90 miles per week and cover a marathon distance in less than 3 hours. To this day Jack is the most impressive athlete I have ever met.
A very important theme that I learned from Master Chief Cargal is to respect and understand the importance of longevity.
I hope that Jack is running to the beach every day again, where ever he is now.

Master Chief Jack Cargal was a calm, wise, and professional leader of many young men and women forging out their own careers. He was always there to assist and offer guidance towards a successful career, a great squadron, and a better United States Navy. I will always remember Jack Cargal for his friendship and professionalism. My prayers are with Jack and his family. God Bless!

During my 1976-78 tour in VP-4, Jack Cargal was the Command Master Chief.
A quiet and unassuming professional, Jack Cargal was the man behind the scene who had an uncanny ability to just get things done with what seemed like little bother. Having stood at parade rest during numerous Change-of-Command ceremonies and unable to concentrate on the various speeches, I requested the entire squadron be provided seats for the remarks portion of the event. Master Chief Cargal found and positioned chairs behind each sailor standing in ranks. After the traditional inspection, the entire squadron was directed to take their seats to enjoy the remaining ceremony all because Master Chief Cargal saw to it that every sailor as well as the guest had a chair. For those of you who enjoyed the seating arrangement during the 1978 Change-of-Command, you have Master Chief Cargal to thank. He was the heart and soul of the squadron and is already missed.

To the family of Master Chief Jack Cargal, I wish to express my condolences. During my tour of duty with VP-4 from 1961-1963, I had the utmost respect and admiration for Master Chief Cargal, his outstanding technical skills, leadership, overall professionalism, and airmanship. It was my sincere pleasure and honor to have served with him. We have lost a very good man. God bless to you Master Chief and to your family.

Master Chief Cargal was a superb Master Chief Petty Officer and it is with great sorrow that the news of his passing has been received. I wish to extend my condolences to the members of his family and his many friends. Jack was my sponsor when I joined VP-4 during 1979 and we had some very memorable and enjoyable times. His tour of Duty as the Command Master Chief was an inspiration to all of the members of VP-4. Jack was truly a legend in the Barbers Point VP Community. I am sure that now he is running on that highway of Gold in the heaven above. You will be missed Jack!

First, my condolences to the Cargal family for your loss.
I had the good fortune of serving with Master Chief Jack Cargal on two tours of duty with VP-4. The first was 63-65 where we flew in the same flight crew. And no Jack, I did not fall for your thesis that the APS-20 was responsible for the circle of thin hair at the top of your head. The second was as my Command Master Chief (76-77). What a superb leader! Jack always displayed the utmost in leadership, decorum, moral integrity, and a calm, professional mannerism. I not only valued Jack as a shipmate, but foremost as a close personal friend. You will be missed by the hundreds of shipmates you served with as well as family and friends. God Bless you and your family. Save a place for me on your crew.

Master Chief Cargal was the epitome of what it meant to be a Chief Petty Officer! His leadership and guidance was instrumental in my career and I will always be grateful. My prayers are with Jack and his family, may he rest in peace.

Two constants I remember from when I was stationed at Barbers Point; The admiral marching with his bagpipes at sunup, and Master Chief Cargal jogging. Master Chief Cargal was a "Beacon of light" to this still "Green-behind-the-ears" sailor when I arrived in VP4. He would often stop and take the time to give me positive feedback that he'd been hearing from my fellow squadronmates. He really had a strong, everlasting impression on me and has not been, nor will be forgotten...

Masterchief Cargal was one of the first persons I met when I checked in to VP-4 in Okinawa. I was young, inexperienced, new and Master-chief Cargal was a real force with strength poring out every part of his character. His stature was reassuring and he taught me how to stand tall and be an officer. I will never forget my encounters with him. The Navy was sure lucky to have men like him who lead by example.

Of course he was a great leader; he was a Master Chief! I remember that he loved to run. While deployed to NAS Cubi Point he ran over 10 miles of a 64 mile relay run along the route of the Bataan Death March. He loved to out run (whenever he could) our Commanding Officer at the time, Ted Rodgers. We are all going to miss you, but what an adventuresome life you had. VP4 '76-'79
