ANNA - Jackie Vernon Harris, 84, of Veterans Home of Anna, since 2003, and formerly of Makanda, passed away at 1:03 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, in Union County Hospital.

Jackie was born June 19, 1929, in Granite City, to Jasper and Florence (Hawkins) Harris.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
Survivors include sons, Steven and wife, Christah Harris of Palm Springs, Calif., and Johnny Harris of Plantation, Fla.; daughters, Linda and husband, David Volentine of Rye, Colo., Sandy and husband, Reinhard Steep of Rio, W.V., and Janice and husband, Garoll Ralls, of Dongola; sisters, Evelyn Odum of Murphysboro, Edna Pollitt of Columbus, Ind.; brother, Dick Harris of Long Beach, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel (Ragsdale) Harris of many years; brothers, Robert, Glenn and Henry "fuzz" Harris; sister, Naomi Sands; and sons, Danny and Larry Harris.
Services with military rites will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, in Evergreen Cemetery in Makanda.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Makanda Evergreen Cemetery Association, 777 Springer Ridge Road, Carbondale, IL 62902-7907.
