Kenneth Smoot Obituary

ANNA -- Kenneth L. "Smokie" Smoot, 78, died at 2:22 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, in Union County Hospital in Anna.

He was born June 20, 1933, in Dongola, the son of Claude W. and Lena Porterfield Smoot.

He married Shirley J. Russell on March 16, 1968, in New Hope Baptist Church.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Shirley Smoot of Anna; one son, Mike (Karen) Smoot of Anna; grandchild, Evan Smoot of Anna; aunt, Lillian Henderson of Anna; nephew, Barry Smoot of Marion; cousins; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Carroll Smoot.

Kenneth was a member of Anna Heights Baptist Church and he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He retired from Choate Mental Health and Development Center in the food storage department and was known by many as the "ice cream man." "Smokie" loved and cared for his family and his pride and joy was spending time with his grandson, Evan.

Services for Mr. Kenneth L. "Smokie" Smoot will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Paul Sadler officiating. Interment will be in Anna City Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 30, at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christian Chapel Cemetery. Envelopes will be available at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
