Milo Halstead Obituary

CARTERVILLE -- Milo Harold Halstead, 89, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Herrin Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville with the Rev. Richard Reed officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville with military rites conducted by Marion VFW Hyde-Pillow Post 1301 and Illinois Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959 or to Grand Avenue Baptist Church, 116 W. Grand Avenue, Carterville, IL 62918. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.

Harold was born April 8, 1922, in Carterville to Milo Earnest and Mamie Florence (McRoy) Halstead.

He married Norma June Cannon on June 28, 1947, in Carterville.

He is survived by his wife, Norma June Halstead, of Carterville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Cindy Halstead of Katy, Texas, and Jerry and Kathy Halstead of Carterville; sister, Naomi Anderson, of Venice, Fla.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Natalie and Ricardo Emans of Katy, Texas, Jason and Amber Halstead of Herrin, Aaron Halstead of Carterville, Jennifer Halstead of Carterville; and Emily Halstead of Katy, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Alexandria Emans of Katy, Texas, Kayden Blayne Martin of Adairsville, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Mildred Reinheimer, Velda Mae Stover, Margaret Bosse, Estel Hammond, Maxine Basler, Joanne Russell and Carol Sue Rains; and a brother, Ralph Gene Halstead.

Harold retired in April 1984 from Norge Industries in Herrin, where he worked as a warehouse manager.

He honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving overseas in the South Pacific. He was a water tender second class and served on two destroyers, the USS Lawrence and the USS Tausig.

Harold was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville and International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers.
