Nelson Gauto Obituary
Dr. Gauto was born Sept. 20, 1964, in Asuncion, Paraguay, where he attended National University of Asuncion School of Medical Sciences. He completed his residencies for general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Fla.; Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.; and Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
He completed his residency for plastic surgery at the Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, and then had his fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada. Dr. Gauto moved to Herrin in December 2000 where he established Southern Illinois Plastic Surgery. He was an active member in American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Medical Association, Canadian Society of Plastic Surgery, Massachusetts Medical Society, Illinois State Medical Society and American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc.
Dr. Gauto was also a master Mason in the local Masonic Temple and traveled throughout the world with the organization. Dr. Gauto is survived by his wife, Suzanne Gauto and two children, Elliot and Oliver Gauto. The remainder of his family lives in Paraguay, including his mother, Maria Gauto, sister, Graciela Baez and brother, Jose Gauto.
Nelson was a loving husband and father, a dear friend and caring physician to so many. He will dearly be missed by all those lives he touched.
A memorial service for Dr. Nelson F. Gauto, MD, FRCS, has been planned for Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Friends may visit from noon to 3 p.m. and are welcome to attend the memorial Mass at 3 p.m. with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating.

It is with great sadness that I offer your family my sympathy. Nelson was a resident of mine when I moved to halifax. He was a kind and caring physician whom I had the pleasure to visit with again in Toronto this past fall. He hadn't changed at all and he seemed so content with his life. Dear Suzanne, I am so sorry to hear about Nelson's death. Probably I was his first friend in this country when he arrived many years ago from Paraguay. We saw each other every single day while he was living in Massachusetts and I knew that he was a very special person. I would have never imagined that I would be writing these words today. Even though we have not seen each other for 14 years, he never forgot my birthday. Unfortunately I could not attend your wedding but when we spoke on the phone a few times a year, his words were always “next time we will meet in person and I will introduce you my wife and kids”. A month ago, on his way to Paraguay to visit his mother, he called me and we had a long conversation. Therefore, I was shocked when a few hours after his death I received an e-mail giving me this sad news. He was a very special friend for me and I miss him terribly. Suzanne, please accept my condolences and I hope I can still honor my friend and get to meet his beautiful family.

I was a patient of Dr. Gauto and I found him to be kind, gentle and very gifted. He was much more than just a dr., he was an artist and a good man. He will be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with his family at this time.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Gauto in the medical field and have to say he was a wonferful physician and man of God. He will be dearly missed. I know how much his patients, family and friends will miss him, I have seen him personally go above and beyond in regards to his medicla care and compassion. He treated all of his patients with the same compassion and care. The last 6 months I had been at his office almost weekly. His staff was wonderful as well.

I had the opportunity to shadow him for a few weeks and quickly came to know how fond his patients were of him. His death is a great loss to the community, he was a great physician. I was Dr.Gauto's first office nurse. He was always very good to me and I value all the teaching he gave me. He always showed patience. He was an excellent surgeon and boss that genuinely cared about people. It is such a loss. I never met his wife or children but I keep them in my thoughts and prayers.
