DU QUOIN - Paul L. Phillips, 83, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

He had been a buggy runner for Freeman United Coal Company for 43 years. He was of the Christian Church faith.
Paul was a member of UMWA. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed doing yard work.
He was born Aug. 19, 1929, in Hallidayboro, the son of Robert C. and Marie (Halstead) Phillips.
Paul married Rose Ann Boros Aug. 28, 1948, in Murphysboro, and she survives in Du Quoin.
Other survivors include five children, Valorie Marlow and husband Rich of Pinckneyville, Jimmy L. Phillips and wife Peggy Lu of Pinckneyville, Marjorie Vancil and husband Steve of Broken Arrow, Okla., Ted Phillips and wife Deb C. of Dix and Jeffrey Phillips and wife Billie of Du Quoin; and 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Edward Phillips, Jack Phillips and Robert L. Phillips.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 28, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with the Rev. Benton Fitzjerrells officiating. Burial will be in Elkville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the humane society, St. Bruno's School or the donor's choice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
