Walter Newcomb Obituary

BENTON -- Walter L. "Jerk" Newcomb, 83, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, in Helia Healthcare in Benton.

He was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Ewing, the son of Steve and Ortis (Page) Newcomb.

Mr. Newcomb married Rudell (Short) Smith on Oct. 25, 1950, and she survives.

He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Newcomb was retired from AMAX Coal Co.

He is survived by his wife, Rudell (Short) Newcomb of Benton; children, Patti Gilbreath and husband, Bill, of Benton, Mike Newcomb and wife, Kathy, of West Frankfort; two grandchildren, Shawn Yadloski and wife, Shauna, of Vienna, Trisha Fechtler and husband, Adam, of West Frankfort; stepgranddaughter, Janet Fletcher and husband, Bill, of Sesser; two great-grandchildren, Gracelyn Yadloski and BreeAnna Fletcher; and brother, Ronald Newcomb of Ewing.

Mr. Newcomb was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Mark Minor officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Helia Healthcare in Benton and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Walter and I worked together as drivers for the Marion Eye Center in the mid-nighties. Walter's brother lived, or perhaps still lives, in the Buzbee home place in Ewing. Our thoughts and prayer's are with Walter's family and friends.
