Wilbert Ehlers Obituary

CAMPBELL HILL -- Wilbert E. Ehlers, 86, passed away at 12:12 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, in Coulterville Care Center.

He was born May 20, 1924, in Campbell Hill, the son of Ernest F. Ehlers and Clara (Hornbostel) Ehlers.

Wilbert married Martha Grace Craig on Jan. 24, 1948, in Campbell Hill.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Ehlers of Campbell Hill; children, Wilbert Dean and Billie Ehlers of Swansea, Carolyn and Charles Dinkins of Pinckneyville, Gary and Earleen Ehlers of Waterloo; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Ernest and Katherine Ehlers of Campbell Hill, Garrett Roy and Pat Ehlers of Campbell Hill, Ray and Alice Ehlers of Campbell Hill, Melvin and Meredith Ehlers of Campbell Hill; sisters, Helen and Edgar Wilson of Chester, and Pauline Welty of Sparta.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; one sister; and one stepgrandchild.

He was a retired carpenter and was also the former mayor of Campbell Hill and maintenance man for the village. Wilbert was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill but he attended the First Christian Church in Pinckneyville. He was also a member of the Carpenters Union in Chester.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Jeff Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Campbell Hill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, both at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or First Christian Church.
