ANNA - Charlene Wing Gates, 87, formerly of Springfield, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, in Anna Rehab and Care Center.
She was born April 5, 1925, in Harrisburg, the daughter of Charles Edward and Lily Mae Snider Wing.
She married Frederick Lee Gates on Oct. 27, 1944, in Harrisburg.
Charlene is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Frederick Lee Gates of Anna; two daughters, Pamela (Larry) Van Alstine of Chatham and Marilyn (Mike) Meisenheimer of Jonesboro; three grandchildren, Lee (Christina) Van Alstine of Cape Girardeau, Lindsay Meisenheimer and fiancé, Casey Johnson and Lance (Danyelle) Meisenheimer, all of Jonesboro; seven great-grandchildren, Alexa, Madison, Kai and Bryn Van Alstine, Landon and Reese Lofton and Eva Meisenheimer; other relatives; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Charlene graduated from Harrisburg High School and was also a graduate of University of Illinois with a degree in music education with an emphasis in piano performance. She taught at Ridgway, Divernon, Virden and Chatham-Glenwood school districts. She was well known as the director of the Glenwood Singers, a select vocal group, musical director for Springfield Municipal Opera and church organist as well as musical director for Springfield-area churches. She was a lifelong member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, Illinois Music Educators Association and Illinois Education Association. Charlene and her family were directors of Miss Land of Lincoln Pageant, a preliminary to Miss Illinois Scholarship Pageant.
Services for Mrs. Charlene Wing Gates will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg with Bill Littrell officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity. Envelopes will be available at Sunset Lawn Cemetery and at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
A memorial service will be at a later date in Springfield.
