Clarence Cawvey Obituary
Dr. Cawvey was born May 16, 1929, in Dowell, a son to Clarence Eli and Lois (Matheny) Cawvey.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a captain in the Korean War.
On Sept. 12, 1953, he married Pauline Hincke in Pinckneyville, and she preceded him in death April 4, 1973. On Jan. 26, 1974, he married Linda Rice Hester in Pinckneyville, and she survives.
Dr. Cawvey was a physician in Pinckneyville for many years. His educational career began with Western Military Academy graduating in 1947. He went on to Yale University, which he dearly loved, graduating in 1951. He then graduated from University of Chicago, Division of Biology and Science, School of Medicine in 1955. He interned at Cook County Hospital and completed his residency at Brooke Army Hospital.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pinckneyville.
He was also a member of Archeological Institute of America, St. Louis Society, Missouri Athletic Club, American Medical Association, American Association of Family Practitioners and Illinois Bankers Association. He had served on First National Bank in Pinckneyville Board of Directors for almost 60 years. He formerly served on Perry County Board of Health, Medical Records Review Board in the State of Illinois and was instrumental in the development of SIU School of Medicine.
Dr. Cawvey enjoyed skiing, classical music, traveling, fine food and loved his alma mater, Yale University.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Cawvey of Pinckneyville; two daughters, Anne (Kevin) West of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jeannie Brown of Charlottesville, Va.; a son, Bill Cawvey; a stepson, Doug (Crystal) Hester of Pinckneyville; five grandchildren, Pauline Elizabeth "Polly" (Jeff) Dyson, Alexander Hay, Mason and Ryley Brown and Wyatt Stoneking; two stepgrandchildren, Genevieve and Logan Hester; two great-grandchildren, Tiana and Noah Dyson; and a sister, Susan (Steve) Malan of Pinckneyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Clyde Woosley; his first wife, Pauline Cawvey; a daughter, Janet Cawvey Secrease; a daughter in infancy, Elizebeth Patricia Cawvey; and a stepbrother, Frank Woosley.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, in First United Methodist Church in Pinckneyville with the Rev. Jim Barnett officiating. In-terment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Military graveside rites will conducted by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post 2504 in Pinckneyville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pyatt Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
